All community college administrators are enthusiastically invited to join us in our 2017 conference this Nov 15-17 at the Wyndham Hotel in SpringfieldThis year we are collaborating with the ICCFA for a combined conference.  The theme is "Engage, Ignite, Unite!"

 

 

The Friday morning keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary Howard-Hamilton whose topic will be “Engage! Ignite! Unite! Stand! Focus! and Fight!

Community colleges serve society by providing a better future to the graduating students, many of whom are very motivated and would benefit by getting introduced to basic level research activities. Nanotechnology is the keyword of modern era. It is related to science, engineering, and technology involving materials which are one billionth of a meter. It has greatly impacted the human community by improving drug delivery, decreasing pollution, introducing novel electronics, etc. This presentation will focus on efforts to start research on anti-reflective coating nanoparticles for solar panels and to introduce students of community colleges to this novel field of research.

 

 

 

5f “Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones”

You have likely heard that "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." This session on microaggressions will demonstrate how that adage is a myth. Learn how words, tone and demeanor either encourage or discourage student success and students’ sense of belonging. The term microaggression was initially used to identify subtle insults directed at African Americans, but the term is now applicable to all people of color, religions, underrepresented groups and the LGBTQ community. Participants will identify microaggressions and develop strategies to respond to them and learn how to overcome their use in the classroom.

As part of a Title V grant from the Department of Education, Waubonsee Community College is actively pursuing an objective to increase the average success rate for high-need students in online courses by 10% by September 2020. The plan for achieving this objective includes the development and implementation of an Online Course Quality Rubric and a Master Course Menu template to help provide consistency across all online courses. In this panel discussion, we will cover the process for developing the rubric and template, the training provided for the faculty, and any challenges that have been encountered to date.

Gamification, or game-based course design, is an emerging trend in K-12 education and has recently seen interest as a tool for higher education. Solo missions, levelling up, group cooperation, and reward systems motivate students to take ownership of their education and develop autonomy in a crucial period of development. Results from a pilot study applying gamification to two General Psychology courses will be shared, including details on how the courses differed from traditional course design.

 

 

 

6f “Reach, Support, Empower, Invest: Addressing Faculty’s Role in Minority Male College Achievement”

Approximately 65% of men of color begin higher education at their local community college (Luke & Wood, 2015). These institutions play a vital role in preparing this population for the workforce and/or matriculation to a university.  Yet, men of color have high attrition rates that contribute to their low college completion (Institute for Higher Education in Policy, 2012). This is due, in part, to numerous cultural, social, and political factors that impede their academic pursuits. This session will discuss current research indicates that committed, compassionate, and invested faculty can both increase retention as well as degree completion among men of color.

 

 

 

6g Flex Scheduling: A Student Centered Approach to Developmental Mathematics

7f “Applying Happiness to Intro to Psych”

In our co-taught Intro to Psychology/Comp II class at McHenry County College, we transformed our class theme from MindSpeak to Cranial Contentment and made happiness a major topic throughout the course. In this presentation, we’ll discuss the assignments involved in this transformation, which include a daily happiness presentation, a personalized life improvement research project, and a major paper in addition to a few smaller assignments. These changes seem to have been quite successful; they increased engagement and personal connection to course material (including research methods) and promoted increased energy and morale in both instructors and students.
