Innovation Award Winner

Greg Wear accepts the 2007 Innovation Award on behalf of Rock Valley College from Preston Morgan, Senior Director ICCB

Rock Valley College in partnership with Woodward Governor, a local aerospace manufacturer, has created a program linking full-time college with part-time work.

Students, accepted into the GEM Program, take classes that will earn an A.A.S. degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology as well as work a minimum of 20 hours at Woodward Governor. Rock Valley College recruited 13 students in spring 2007 and another 14 in fall 2007 to participate in the GEM program.  In order to participate, students must satisfy Rock Valley College’s entrance requirements for college-level coursework. Satisfying this requirement, students tour Woodward in order to see the working environment. They are then invited to complete a Woodward application for employment. Employment offers are made to selected students and are contingent upon a criminal background check and drug test. Woodward pays tuition, fees, and books for students who earn a “C” or better in scheduled classes.  The GEM students receive free classes at Rock Valley College, a part time job from Woodward Governor, part time benefits from Woodward Governor, and upon completion an A.A.S. Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology.
