Innovation Award Winner

Laura LaBauve-Maher and Keiko Kimura (not shown) accept the 2007 Innovation Award on behalf of Harper College from Preston Morgan, Senior Director ICCB

Harper College has met the needs of five unique student populations by developing programs designed to smooth the transition into college and ensure greater first-year success and retention.  Specifically, the innovative bridge programs serve:  (a) first-generation, first-time in college, academically at-risk high school graduates transitioning to college; (b) adult students transitioning from adult education programs to college credit programming; (c) new Deaf and Hard of Hearing students preparing for the placement test while acclimating to campus; and (d) students with mild developmental disabilities acquiring general entry level skills to obtain gainful employment.  Though the programs vary in length and complexity, they all have common goals of: (a) improving student retention and academic success; (b) connecting students with vital resources and services; (c) building student confidence and motivation; and (d) increasing campus involvement.
